Enterprise Backup and DR to contribute around 20% of company’s overall revenues by 2018 says Glen Godinho, Assistant Manager TSD, Wysetek Systems Technologists.
Wysetek works with technology OEMs Commvault, Rubrik, Veeam and Veritas from a data protection perspective depending on the right fit for their enterprise customers. Glen Godinho, Assistant Manager TSD, Wysetek Systems Technologists talks on the landscape of the enterprise back up and DR solutions and its importance across various companies.
How long has Wysetek been focusing on technologies like enterprise back up and DR?
Wysetek have adopted data protection as a focused strategy since the last 10 years as it is just a natural transition complimenting the other datacenter Solutions like infrastructure, virtualization and security solutions we design and provide to our customers.
Data protection is the process of safeguarding important information from corruption, compromise or loss. The importance of data protection increases as the amount of data created and stored continues to grow at unprecedented rates. There is also little tolerance for downtime that can make it impossible to access important information. Consequently, a large part of a data protection strategy is ensuring that data can be restored quickly after any corruption or loss. Protecting data from compromise and ensuring data privacy are other key components of data protection.
What are the key reasons for Indian companies opting for these solutions?
Simply put, data is vulnerable. Business data can be lost due to a wide variety of reasons including: Human error, Machine error, Viruses, Natural disasters and Hacking. You can never know at what moment your data may be at risk. In fact, 2017 was a record year for data breaches. Without a rock-solid backup plan, Enterprises may be facing a situation that makes them very vulnerable to attacks and outages thereby making it virtually impossible to recover.
Another compelling reason for Enterprises’ opting for data protection solutions is compliance and regulations. Hence never before than now, has it become absolutely imperative to have a Robust and Reliable Backup / DR Solution. Though traditionally most backup solutions are on-prem, we are slowly seeing Cloud Based Solutions gain dominance in our conversations with the customers.Traditional on-site data protection solutions do not go where more and more of corporates’ data is stored today hence Cloud based backup solutions are the next big wave.
Is DR on cloud popular with Indian CIOs? If no, what are the roadblocks?
Ideally, all businesses should have an IT disaster recover (DR) plan to maintain business continuity in the event of natural or manmade disasters that disrupt their IT infrastructure. However, traditional DR involved replicating data and applications on dedicated backup servers and storage either on premise or at remote locations, and employing qualified IT personnel to create regular backups, test, and maintain this duplicate IT infrastructure. This was an expensive and unaffordable overhead for many companies. Worse, the whole process of restoring data from backup devices such as tapes, CD, or DVD and initializing and running applications on backup servers meant that data transfer was error prone and recovery times were slow – recovery times of several hours or few days were the norm.
This has resulted in more CIO’s option for Cloud based DR Solutions .Today, cloud based Disaster recovery alternatives offer a compelling alternative to traditional DR. Instead of buying and maintaining backup storage and server resources that are brought into use only in the event of a disaster, cloud computing – with its pay-per-use pricing model – allows businesses to pay for long-term data storage and only pay for servers during testing or failover. This significantly reduces cost and makes DR affordable for most enterprises.
Cloud based Disaster Recovery services provide virtual machine snapshots of the physical or virtual servers at the primary data center. Clients only pay for storing the snapshots; storing the applications in a suspended state; and for data synchronization between the primary site and the cloud DR site. Clients pay for servers on an infrastructure-as-a-service basis only in the event of a disaster when the virtual machines (snapshots of the primary servers) need to be brought online during failover.
Cloud DR sites are automated and can be made live within seconds or minutes. This minimizes data loss and improves business continuity.A cloud DR site can be triggered through a normal laptop or mobile device with a wireless internet connection even if the as designed connectivity fails.
Is there a special team at Wysetek for Enterprise Back Up projects and what has been the result?
We have created a separate pool of resources from a Presales and Post Sales standpoint. This is a team of focused, skilled and certified professionals who work on Data Protection as a practice irrespective of brand. The presales designs and sizes the solution carrying out POC’s and providing a solution document detailing the Data sizes , backup policies and retention policies. This has resulted in us providing our clients with “Subject Matter Experts” thereby designing a robust and reliable data protection strategy for them.
Which verticals are opting Enterprise Back Up and DR in India and why? Any new projects?
To be honest Backup is not a matter of choice or a priority of a particular vertical. We are seeing a traction across all verticals especially in the BFSI,Manufacturing,Pharma& ITEs segment.Regulatory Compliance and e-Governance norms have made it mandatory for Enterprises’ to have a proper Enterprise Backup Policy in place. In addition to this malware, APT and ransomware attacks have made it compelling enough a reason for organizations to employ a robust and reliable Backup Solution in place.
We have designed an Enterprise backup Solution for a pharma customer backing up their data across 16 locations around the country onto a Purpose Based Appliance using De-Duplication and compression functionalities.
We have also designed a data Protection Solution for one of our BFSI customers backing up their Data onto an appliance and in turn replicating it to their DR site. We are currently in talks with them of moving their DR onto the Cloud from a backup perspective thereby providing them with scalability, Spin VM’s from backups and pay as per use flexibility.
What key deliverables do CIOs and IT leaders expect from partner like Wysetek deploying Enterprise Back Up solutions?
The three key deliverables that CIO’s expect from an SI like us would be –
1.Offer a Fully Scalable Solution:It’s difficult for customers to envisage where their business will be heading in the next year or say next five years. Customers expect us to design an easily scalable backup solution to meet growing business needs, no matter how much they change
2.Improve Overall Reliability and Recovery Speed:They want us to consider how easy it is to recover. They expect us to establish objectives for recovery times and recovery points that fit the needs of their business and they are simple to deploy.
3.Help keep their data secure: With the high security risk nowadays, they expect us to recommend the right enterprise backup solution that will support full encryption for all files transmitted across locations.
Seamless encryption of their data backups is just the start of their security strategy. Therefore, customers expect that the backup solution we design should have additional security measures to ensure authenticated, authorized, and monitored access around their data.
What are your USPs as a systems integrator company versus competition to undertake enterprise back up projects?
To begin with, Wysetek is not just in the Data Protection space but also in other Datacenter Solutions like Infra , Virtualization , Storage and Security . We have a more thorough insight into the customers IT initiatives. In addition to this, we also have a team of trained and certified professionals who have deployed numerous solutions around Data Protection. We also cover the entire gamut of Data Protection solutions – Virtualized Backup , Physical Backup , Archival Solutions , replication Solutions , end point protection and backup to Cloud .
I strongly feel that Enterprise Backup and DR would contribute minimally 17 to 20% of our overall Company revenues by end of 2018.
